Mrs. Long

Winfield Elementary School Principal Mallory Long is a leader in both the education field and the Army Reserves and has recently moved up in rank in the Army. Long has been at the rank of Major and recently been promoted to Lieutenant Colonel (LTC).

Long has served the U.S. Army Reserves for 19 years and is a logistics officer for the 757th Expeditionary Railway Center, Team 2, based out of Fort Sheridan, IL.

To reach LTC you must have several education requirements fulfilled and hold leadership positions within the Army.

Long has embraced the challenge of balancing family, school leadership, and Army Leadership through sacrifice, hard work, and determination.

“Reaching this milestone means so much to me and my family,” said Long. “The rank of Lieutenant Colonel represents 19 years of sacrifice, hard work, and determination.”

“Balancing school leadership and Army leadership doesn't come without challenges, but having the unwavering support of Mr. (Randy) Thomley, the school district, and the community makes it possible to fulfill my commitment to our country. I'm so grateful for the kind words shared with me during this wonderful season of celebration!”

Winfield City Schools Superintendent Randy Thomely gave some words of encouragement for Mrs. Long at the 4th grade awards day program as students presented Mrs. Long with a handmade American Flag the students created before the event.

“A true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions, and the compassion to listen to the needs of others,” said Thomley during the program. “She does not set out to be a leader but becomes one by the equality of her actions and the integrity of the intent of her heart.”

“The most important thing I learned is that teachers/soldiers watch what their leaders do. You can give them classes and lecture them forever, but it is your example they will follow.”

“Mrs. Long is not a full bird, but I have no doubt she will fulfill every goal she sets out to accomplish in each of her professional careers,” Thomely said.

Following awards day a reception was held for Long and her family at the Elementary School cafeteria, to celebrate her achievement.

Long will have a formal ceremony later this summer where she will be presented with her new insignia representing the rank of Lieutenant Colonel which is a black oak leaf.

Congratulations to LTC Long on your accomplishments.
